Sony just announced two cameras for pre-order that couple with your smart phone to give your phone point and shoot capability. It is a very interesting concept. The idea is to increase functionality and quality.
I don’t know if this will really be that popular. Maybe? Here are my thoughts:
- People love taking pictures.
- People love the ease and convenience that their smart phones give them to take and share photos. (“The best camera you have is the one with you.”)
- People do NOT love the limited quality and capability that most smart phones. For example: poor low light, lack of zoom, lack of wide angle, and grainy images.
I think the key will be if these things are easy to use on the phone. I don’t think image quality will be an issue. Sony makes great sensors and processors to create great images. If Sony manages to make these cameras insanely responsive and easy to use, they might have a product that fills a need for a minority of users.
Honestly, I don’t think most people want the hassle of carrying another thing. This might be the perfect tool for that minority who want the extra zoom, wide angle, and better image quality with the ease sharing on their phone.
